Week 5
Updates about GAD
Project Space is in use
New Wilderness – enquiry project to get people thinking about their art practice, environment, politics about your context – e.g. postmodernism – how this may be past but it was a revisionary period – when we questioned all that was past –
Late 70s to 80s – deconstructing the past – reconstructing with new meanings.
For this project
Appropriate material from the past (Geelong) – and reflect on this. Reflecting on identity in the light of today’s politics and environment.
-
Death of large manufacturing industry
-
State of flux
-
New wilderness is about what is left behind when we have reflected on the past and moved on – e.g. physical spaces are abandoned, but what about other spaces – the phenomena of e.g. unemployment – site specificity with art is now important
-
In past – good art was in galleries. The role of experts in art – to create the collection of a gallery or an institution – e.g. galleries and museums stealing of antiquities as works of art – imposition of meaning on this – and sense of value – e.g. a Ming vase –
-
E.g. Marx and Freud in art theory – because they challenged why we value various things.
-
Suggestion is that now we pitch tents outside Deakin – e.g. on the grass on SE corner – and make an art community – a manifesto –
-
A lot of most exciting art is now outside galleries and museums.
-
Think about the elements – line shape – simulated texture – tonal values – to create form – principles for arranging those. Using contrast – etc.
-
Working with light and time – (which are elements of new media) – reflect on how you wish to maximise works – take nots on the projection – how did it work, how it was different from working on paper – what does working with light add – how does is effect people instead on how they might be reacting in a gallery.
The theme for GAD is ‘light’ – how can we use this?
We’ve been reflecting on
What is art?
How is it affected by context?
-
Culture and background
-
Time
How will you use movement in your art?
New elements for light work
-
Movement (or simulated movement) – can be manipulated – e.g. a painting that moves –
-
‘it’s scary to step out of your zone but artists go for it’
-
Time – a sense of real time – speed time up, or slow art down – e.g. using technology that spies and surveillance cameras can do – slow up -
-
Mixing the speed of frames – play with sound – (but we can’t do this) – for new wilderness in the future – found sounds, digital sound, music
Mess with the audience’s mind –
Light – flickering – stobe – pulsating lights – Shadow projections.
Think about the elements when making work – to enhance the concept. – aesthetic qualities.
This needs to have a written element – the conceptual side – the technical is less supported –
Put the other activities onto the website – put some reflection on the site.
